Children as Leaders

At St. Michael and All Angels, we firmly believe in empowering our pupils to become the leaders of tomorrow. We are committed to providing a nurturing environment that fosters their growth, both academically and personally. One of our core values is promoting student leadership, as we recognise the immense potential within each child to shape their own future and contribute positively to our school community.

We understand that cultivating leadership skills from an early age is crucial for their holistic development. Therefore, we have implemented a range of opportunities that allow our children to explore their talents, build confidence, and develop essential leadership qualities such as responsibility, communication, and decision-making.

One of the ways we encourage student leadership is through our democratic processes. Children have the opportunity to run for various positions, such as School Council representatives, by presenting their ideas and going through an election process similar to our parliamentary system. This not only teaches them about democracy but also instils a sense of civic responsibility and respect for others' opinions.

Additionally, we offer a variety of leadership roles that cater to diverse interests and abilities. For instance, our Playground Leaders receive training to initiate games and activities during lunch breaks, promoting active engagement and positive behaviour. Our Reading Ambassadors foster a love for literacy by partnering with younger students, supporting them in their reading journey and serving as role models.

We also recognise the importance of service leadership, which is why our Year 6 students have the opportunity to become Year 6 Reception Buddies to our youngest pupils. This role allows them to guide and support the newcomers, helping them settle into the school environment while developing their own sense of responsibility and empathy.

Furthermore, our Head Boy and Head Girl positions (and Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl) are highly coveted roles that require exemplary conduct, leadership qualities, and a commitment to representing our school's values. These ambassadors have the privilege of addressing the school community during important events and contributing to the school's decision-making processes.

We believe that by providing these diverse leadership opportunities, we are not only equipping our children with invaluable skills but also instilling in them a sense of ownership and pride in their school community. They learn to embrace challenges, work collaboratively, and develop a growth mindset that will serve them well beyond their academic years.

We invite you as parents to join us in celebrating and supporting your children's leadership journey. Together, we can nurture their potential and empower them to become the confident, responsible, and compassionate leaders of the future.
